Effects of Foliar Fertilization on Incidence of Berry Shrivel and Bunch Stem Necrosis inVitis viniferaL. CVS ‘Pinot Blanc’ and ‘Zweigelt’

Abstract: and bunch stem necrosis are the economically most important physiological disorders of grapevine. The nutritional status of the plant is considered as one of the main elicitors for the occurrence of these disorders. For foliar fertilization trials, two vineyards that had previously been affected by both diseases were selected in Southwest Germany, one with the variety 'Zweigelt' and one with Pinot Blanc. By the use of potassium, magnesium, and calcium foliar fertilizers, a rapid increase of different nutrients… Show more

“…Past studies focused on morpho-anatomical issues (Hall et al 2011 ; Bondada and Keller 2012a ; Bondada 2014 ; Crespo-Martínez et al 2019 ), nutritional aspects (Bachteler et al 2015 ; Bondada 2016 ; Griesser et al 2017 ), viticultural practices (Raifer et al 2014 ) or on a restricted list of genes (Griesser et al 2018 ).…”

“…The V. vinifera cv Zweigelt (St. Laurent × Blaufränkisch) is one of the most important red grape varieties in Austria. Several studies reported that this cultivar is particularly sensitive and highly affected by BS (in German Traubenwelke) (Knoll et al 2010 ; Griesser et al 2012 ; Bachteler et al 2015 ; Griesser et al 2017 , 2018 ). Unsteady yields are problematic and lead to high economic losses for producers and winemakers since it is not possible to obtain good quality grape and wine from BS grape.…”

“…Consistent with an onset at veraison, the seeds of BS‐affected berries appear healthy and germinate at rates similar to those of unaffected berries (Hall et al 2011, Bondada and Keller 2012a). Although pathological, nutritional and other environmental stressors have been evaluated, the cause of this disorder remains unknown (Knoll et al 2006, Krasnow et al 2009, Bachteler et al 2015, Zufferey et al 2015, Keller et al 2016, Griesser et al 2017). Though the rather sudden cessation of sugar accumulation by BS berries implies a disruption of phloem inflow, it is unknown whether this disruption originates in the berries themselves or in the bunch rachis (Bondada and Keller 2012a, Bondada 2014, Keller et al 2016).…”

“…There is no obvious explanation for why some grape clusters on a shoot or a vine are affected while others remain healthy, or why some vines have clusters with BS symptoms while others produce wholly healthy grapes. The premise that BS is a consequence of potassium deficiency could not be experimentally validated ( Bachteler et al , 2015a , b ; Griesser et al , 2017 ), compelling us to explore soil, climate, or micro-climate factors as potential causes, as growers observe BS under varied growing conditions. The elucidation of potential environmental triggers could help to understand the patchiness of BS incidence, possibly by determining inflorescence development and fruit set or ripening onset.…”
