“…The cetane number of a fuel is inversely related to its ignition delay . Diesel fuels with higher cetane numbers (shorter ignition delays) allow for more efficient fuel consumption, decreased emissions, and reduced engine knocking and wear. Previous work on alkyl adamantanes , revealed that this class of fuels exhibit derived cetane numbers of >40, regardless of the length of the alkyl chain (C 2 –C 5 ) or the degree of substitution, including the tetra-substituted diamondoid ETMA. These results suggested that the alkyl diamondoids synthesized in the current work would similarly possess cetane numbers high enough for efficient combustion in a conventional diesel engine.…”
