Effects of Gating System Design on Tensile Properties of Cast Aluminium 6063 Alloy

Abstract: The effects of gating system design on the tensile strength properties of cast Al-Mg-Si alloy component were studied, with gating sprue diameters of 10 mm and 12 mm respectively for pressurized and non-pressurized systems. A match plate pattern was made for channels and mould cavity preparation, while the pouring temperature is at 680 0 C maintained as the optimum temperature. The variation with respect to increasing ingate of 1 to 3 was observed, the resulting castings from the gating system were compared for… Show more

“…The centrifugal force is influenced by the rotational speed, radius, metal density [1], and gating system [3]. The non-pressurized system, with reduced turbulence and the increasing cross-sectional area towards the mold cavity, can increase the mechanical properties [4]. Moreover, to improve the average bending strength can be done by enlarging the vortex runner diameter in the gating system [5].…”

“…On the other hand, it can reduce the mechanical properties of the product. In the gating system, decreasing cross-sectional area towards the mold cavity increased the pressure that will affect the tensile strength [16]. On the contrary, increasing cross-sectional area towards the mold cavity reduced turbulence [16].…”

“…In the gating system, decreasing cross-sectional area towards the mold cavity increased the pressure that will affect the tensile strength [16]. On the contrary, increasing cross-sectional area towards the mold cavity reduced turbulence [16]. Research of gate shape and direction on centrifugal casting is still needed to make the best design so that liquid metal can enter the mold cavity with higher pressure and low turbulence.…”

“…Runners are to be designed such that it fills quickly and the velocity of the metal reduces steadily from the runner entrance to the ingate. It has been shown that castings produced using pressurized system is inferior to those produced by unpressurised system [3].…”
