Effects of Geriatric Education on the Attitudes of Medical Students

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of an educational program in geriatrics on the attitudes of a group of third-year medical students. A survey designed to measure attitudes toward geriatric patient care, aging, and older people was administered to all students before and after their participation in a 25-hour geriatrics education component of a Family Practice Clerkship. Results showed the students' attitudes were significantly improved following the geriatrics training program. Prior training in geriatrics … Show more

“…In our study, male students demonstrated greater overall improvement in attitudes than female students, a finding that has also been reported in previous studies testing the effect of geriatric educational training and clinical exposure interventions on attitudes toward older adults (Hughes et al, 2008; Warren, Painter, & Rudisill, 1983). A likely explanation is that since females had high attitude scores pre-program, there was a ceiling effect for females, whereas male students had lower baseline scores, allowing room for improvement.…”

“…In our study, the early pharmacy practice experience course in geriatrics may have contributed to the positive attitudes of students towards the elderly given that previous studies found that exposing students to a course in geriatrics improved their attitudes towards the elderly. 13,17,[19][20][21][22] As Hughes and colleagues found, students' comfort levels with the elderly probably increased as a result of interacting with geriatric patients during the course. 3 Study findings show that for most items, gender, age, race/ethnicity, marital status, having children, and type of upbringing (rural or not) were not related to the students' attitudes.…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] In addition, educational interventions such as clinical practice experiences in geriatrics also improve medical students' attitudes towards the elderly. 13,17,[19][20][21][22] Little has been published about the attitudes of pharmacy students towards geriatric patients. In one previous study pharmacy students were found to have favorable attitudes toward the elderly.…”
