Effects of gibberellins on important agronomic traits of horticultural plants

Abstract: Horticultural plants such as vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants are crucial to human life and socioeconomic development. Gibberellins (GAs), a class of diterpenoid compounds, control numerous developmental processes of plants. The roles of GAs in regulating growth and development of horticultural plants, and in regulating significant progress have been clarified. These findings have significant implications for promoting the quality and quantity of the products of horticultural plants. Here we review re… Show more

“…Changes in GA biosynthesis and signaling pathways not only regulate plant height but also influence environmental and biotic stress tolerance, 78,79 floral organ development, 80 and quality traits. 81 In the breeding context, the diverse roles of GA can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, dwarf germplasm with unfavorable pleiotropy due to GA deficiency or overdose may limit breeding applications.…”

“…GA3 brings many benefits to plant growth, such as increasing the elongation of stems and segments, producing seed germination, and promoting enzyme production during germination and involvement in fruit settings [9,15]. In vegetable production, gibberellins have improved crop uniformity, germination, ease of harvesting and storage [16][17][18]. In contrast, the PBZ effect consists of chemical antagonists to GA3.…”

“…They are produced at one location and transported to another for their influence; however, some of them have the same site of synthesis and effect [3]. Although both auxins and GAs can stimulate parthenocarpic fruit formation, there are still some differences in the development process of the parthenocarpic fruits [4].…”
