Effects of hay quality on intake, growth path, body composition and muscle characteristics of Salers heifers

Abstract: -A comparison between continuously (CG group, n = 9) and discontinuously (DG, n = 14) growing Salers heifers during a two year growth period after weaning was performed. Feed was available to all animals ad libitum throughout the experiment. Growth differences in the winter resulted from a different quality of the offered hay. In the summer, the animals were conducted indoors and offered the same good quality hay. Serial slaughter was carried out in order to estimate the evolution of body composition and muscl… Show more

“…Vestergaard et al (2000) and Młynek et al (2006) have reported a similar pattern. Hoch et al (2005) revealed a higher share of fast glycolytic (FG) fibres in the m. triceps brachii (55.8-57.4%) of intensively growing animals (from 884 to 975 g/day). The percentage share of these fibres in the less intensively growing animals (558-698 g/day) ranged from 54.5 to 55.5%, while their activity of lactate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase was significantly lower.…”
