Effects of Heat Treatment on The Wettability and Color Properties of Betung Bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) Strand

Abstract: Betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) has recently attracted interest as a sustainable reinforcement fiber in (polymer) composite materials. Utilization of bamboo has an advantages and disadvantages. It has a short growth cycle, lightweight, and good mechanical properties, but with poor wettability, dimensional instability, and low resistance againts biodeterioration agent. Some efforts have been devoted to alter and enhance its properties, especially wettability properties. Heat treatment under various temperat… Show more

“…Various factors related to wettability properties come into play as the temperature increases. Elevated temperatures induce a reduction in hydroxyl groups within cellulose chains, leading to diminished moisture uptake and decreased water adsorption, thereby influencing wettability properties (Sipahutar et al, 2021). Furthermore, heightened temperatures result in the expansion of membrane pores, escalating the risk of membrane wetting and enlarging pore sizes.…”

“…In addition, as the exposure time increases, the MC value will increase (Maulana et al 2019). This phenomenon can be attributed to BOSB being composed of hygroscopic bamboo strands that have the ability to absorb moisture (Baiti et al 2021a;Murda et al 2022b;Sipahutar et al 2021).…”

“…i Synthetic rubber coatings can be simply applied to the surface of bamboo by brushing or spraying, making the treatment process simple and accessible. [42][43][44][45][46] Various chemicals are used in the treatment of bamboo to increase its durability and protect it from biodegradation. The chemicals act as preservatives, extending the lifespan of bamboo in a variety of applications.…”

“…2.5. Heat treatment [52][53][54] Bamboo heat treatment entails treating bamboo to high temperatures in a controlled setting in order to change its physical and mechanical properties. This procedure can improve bamboo's stability, durability, and resilience, making it appropriate for a variety of uses.…”
