Electric mobility decarbonizes the transportation sector and effectively addresses sustainable development goals. A good battery thermal management system (BTMS) is essential for the safe working of electric vehicles with lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) to address thermal runaway and associated catastrophic hazards effectively. However, PCMs suffer from low thermal conductivity issues, and hence, enhancement techniques include the use of fins, nano‐additives, extended graphite powder, and so forth. The use of composite phase change materials effectively addresses LIB thermal management widely used in electric vehicles while mitigating thermal runaway, besides providing flame retardancy, thermal/mechanical stability, and electrical insulation, and preventing leakage. It is noted that no single strategy of BTMS is brought down to a safe zone of temperature, and hybrid BTMSs are being employed, invariably involve phase change materials (PCMs) to a large extent. It is essential to utilize CPCMs to address the effects of low‐temperature environments and vibrations considering vehicle driving cycles and operating conditions. It is observed from the review that ultrasonic monitoring and early detection of internal short circuits are the steps towards mitigation of thermal runaway propagation. It is required to utilize optimization methods, machine learning and IoT tools for a feasible PCM based BTMS work. Present review briefly describes potential methods for effective utilization of PCMs, comparison among different methods, challenges associated and potential solutions. It is highly essential to develop compact and economical BTMS with effective CPCMs for better and safer LIB operation to attract large‐scale commercialization of electric vehicles.

Battery thermal management (BTM) is crucial for the lifespan and safety of batteries. Refrigerant cooling is a novel cooling technique that is being used gradually. As the core fluid of refrigerant cooling, refrigerants need to possess excellent properties while meeting environmental requirements. This paper elucidates the current state of refrigerants (single refrigerants and mixed refrigerants), synchronously summarizing them from the perspectives of refrigerant properties and refrigerant cooling (immersion and cold plate indirect). It outlines the advantages and disadvantages of single and mixed refrigerants as well as the research and development in the vehicle thermal management system (TMS). The choice of refrigerant directly affects cooling performance, and research on vehicle air conditioning (AC) systems can indirectly guide the BTM. R1234yf and R152a can directly replace R134a, while although R744 has a strong heating capacity, it cannot directly replace R134a. Specific mixed refrigerants reduce the global warming potential (GWP) and flammability issues, thereby improving system efficiency. Additionally, immersion cooling controls the temperature through container pressure. Coordinated control strategies are crucial for indirect cold plate cooling, offering broad prospects for optimizing the cold plate design and intelligent control. The selection of refrigerant and the optimal design of the cooling method greatly improve the thermal performance of the battery. This may promote the good development of BTM.

Single‐step preparation of intrinsic solid–solid phase change materials with excellent anti‐leakage and form‐stable performance

Phase change materials (PCM) often encounter severe problems of leakage and shape collapse concerns. Chemical modification methods, utilizing chemical bonds to bind phase change molecular chains, have the potential to address the above‐mentioned problems radically. However, this approach often entails the use of expensive raw materials and complex processes. Therefore, a simple one‐pot preparation method had been reported using earth‐abundant and inexpensive octadecyl methacrylate (OMA) and 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HD) as raw materials to prepare PCM with a molecular structure of cross‐linked polymer main chains and phase change side chains through free radical polymerization. Owing to the three‐dimensional polymer main chain structure, it exhibited excellent leakage‐proof performance, maintaining its form‐stable nature at 70°C with no obvious leakage observed during the phase change process, confirming it to be an excellent intrinsic solid–solid PCM (SSPCM). Additionally, the introduction of the cross linking segment significantly improves its thermal stability, and the 50% degradation temperature increased significantly from 228.8 to 355.9°C. Moreover, the latent heat increased with the decrease of the crosslinking density until the molar ratio of HD/OMA was reduced to 1/40 and then tended to reach constant. At the optimal ratio the latent heat of SSPCM can reach 88.23 J g−1. Excessive crosslinking density will affect the stacking tightness of molecular chains during the crystallization process, thereby reducing the latent heat.
