Effects of High-speed Elastic Band Training on Physical Fitness and Muscle Function in Rural Community-dwelling Elderly: a Single-blinded Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Background: Aging related decrease in muscle strength and flexibility leads to functional loss of physical ability. Power training is known to improve these capacities and helps in performing daily routine better. Therefore, we modified previously proven and certified sarcopenia intervention exercise for elderly in rural community and applied them to examine the effects on physical fitness and muscle functions to show its applicability. Methods: Subjects were divided into control and exercise group using singl… Show more

“…The prevalence range of cognitive impairment in this study (3.1%–18.9%) is relatively lower than that in previous studies (24%–78.4%) 13,41 . However, the prevalence of cognitive impairment and the domains assessed in different studies may vary, making it challenging to compare prevalence across studies.…”

“…In this study, multiple comorbidities were present in the sample, which were predominantly HF (82.4%) and chronic kidney disease (92.2%). In a previous Korean study, 41 approximately 1 in 4 Korean patients with HF (24%) had general cognitive impairment as assessed by the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination. In the current study (mean age, 49.4–64.7 years; NYHA class I–II, 87.3%), cognitive impairment assessed by the same method was 6% to 8%.…”

“…However, the agriculture-specific environment, such as working long hours in an uncomfortable position, is causing chronic agrarianism and various diseases. Additionally, the increase in sedentary lifestyles due to mechanization of farming tools has amplified the prevalence of chronic diseases such as decreased muscle mass, excessive accumulation of body fat, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome in rural older adults [5]. Comparison of the prevalence of aging-related fragility between urban and rural areas revealed that it was 10.3% in urban areas and 17.4% in rural areas, and fragile older adults are reported to be vulnerable to fatigue and declining muscle strength [6].…”
