Effects of High Voltage Pulsed DBD on the Aerodynamic Performances in Subsonic and Transonic Conditions

Abstract: The paper presents the results of a research activity that aims to investigate the control effect of fast rising pulse Dielectric Barrier Discharge actuators (DBD) in high speed flow conditions. At this aim, several experimental tests have been performed on a 2D wind tunnel model in subsonic and transonic conditions to collect information concerning effects of DBD actuators on the main aerodynamic aerofoil performance. The Mach number was varied between 0.4 and 0.85 at angles of attack ranging between -2° and … Show more

“…UZEN is normally used for simulating steady and unsteady flows around complex aeronautical configurations [23]. Some peculiar phenomena [21,24] and particular devices [25,26] can be reproduced. The κ − ω − γ SST [6] model, which was recently implemented and verified [16], has been applied.…”

“…UZEN solves the compressible Navier-Stokes equations based on a multi-block structured approach, and is normally used for simulating steady and unsteady flows around complex aeronautical models. Evidence of its efficacy has been provided through reproduction of flows involving some peculiar phenomena [24,25] and for complex devices [26,27]. The spatial discretization in UZEN consists of a central finite-volume formulation with explicit blended 2nd and 4th order artificial dissipation.…”

“…Fluidic air-jet VGs and tangential jet blowing with position at 15% of the chord length to control SBLI were also considered in [5]. Boundary layer suction [7] and application of plasma actuators [8][9] were also considered. These concepts have multiple advantages, such as optional turning on during cruise regime and operation in a closed-loop strategy to optimize flow control.…”
