Effects of Hybridized Synthetic Fibers on the Shear Properties of Cement Composites

Abstract: The use of fibers in cementitious composites yields numerous benefits due to their fiber-bridging capabilities in resisting cracks. Therefore, this study aimed to improve the shear-resisting capabilities of conventional concrete through the hybridization of multiple synthetic fibers, specifically on reinforced concrete structures in seismic-prone regions. For this study, 16 hybrid fiber-reinforced concretes (HyFRC) were developed from the different combinations of Ferro macro-synthetic fibers with the Ultra-Ne… Show more

“…Basically, reinforcing the concrete with synthetic fiber significantly improves crack occurrence, good abrasion resistance, and reduces crack dispersion due to synthetic fibers have higher ductility than concrete [ [102] , [103] , [104] , [105] , [106] ]. Specifically, employing the waste synthetic fiber can reduce the crack propagation, and crack width of concrete under ultimate strength loading [ 23 , 62 , 107 , 108 ]. Most of the literature found increasing the synthetic fiber content and length increases the resistance to the crack occurrence of concrete [ 109 , 110 ].…”

“…Moreover, macro-synthetic fiber is an economical material because it can replace shrinkage and temperature reinforcement and can reduce the reinforcing bar work. According to previous studies, polypropylene (PP) fibers are effective in preventing an explosion of concrete [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Macro-synthetic fibers made of polypropylene have a melting point that is approximately 160 °C lower than that of steel or glass fibers.…”
