Effects of FABP4 variation on milk fatty-acid composition for dairy cattle grazed on pasture in late lactation

Abstract: This research communication describes associations between variation in the fatty acid binding protein 4 gene (FABP4) and milk fat composition in New Zealand Holstein-Friesian × Jersey cross dairy cows. After correcting for the effect of the amino acid substitution p.K232A in diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1), which is associated with variation in many milk fatty acid (FA) component levels, the effect of FABP4 c.328A/G on milk FA levels was typically small. For the five genotypes analysed, the AB cows… Show more

“…Bionaz and Loor (2008) described gene networks involved in bovine milk fat synthesis and suggested that the C14:0 FA in milk was mainly derived from de-novo synthesis in the mammary gland. Previous studies suggest that DGAT1, FABP4 and SCD could affect C14:0 FA levels (Li et al, 2020a(Li et al, , 2020b(Li et al, , 2021, and this was confirmed by the results in Supplementary Table S2, but no effect was observed for C14:0. After correcting for possible interactions with these genes, the effect of variant c.*302T>C on C10:0, C11:0, C12:0, C13:0 and C16:0 FA levels, and the MCFA and LCFA groups appeared to be stronger (i.e.…”

“…The cows were typed for DGAT1 , FABP4 and SCD1 variation using the methods described by Li et al . (2020 a , 2020 b , 2021) respectively. Only 405 of the original 409 cows could be typed for all three of these genes.…”

“…Thus, our vascular proteome changes as we age. Here, we discuss one specific protein, which is equally important for meat quality [6], feed efficiency [7], and milk content variability in livestock [8,9] as it is for lipid metabolism in health and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in humans: fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4). In this review, we will provide an update on some biology of FABP4, the role of FABP4 in atherosclerotic disease, genetic factors modifying FABP4 levels, drug development, and a future perspective.…”
