Effects of Spartina alterniflora invasion on the community structure and diversity of wetland soil bacteria in the Yellow River Delta

Abstract: The exotic plant Spartina alterniflora is expanding rapidly along China's coast regions, seriously threatening native ecosystems. Soil bacteria are important for biogeochemical cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, in wetland ecosystems. There is growing evidence that microorganisms are important in case of plant invasion. In the present study, we studied the interlacing area of S. alterniflora and Suaeda heteroptera, selected soil of invaded and non‐invaded regions and explored the effect o… Show more

“…For bacteria, the primers of the V3–V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was amplified by following a previous study [ 32 ]. For fungi, the primers of ITS1 were amplified using a previous study [ 33 ]. The Illumina Novaseq 6000 platform was used to obtain the raw data.…”

“…The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is a typical wetland ecosystem in China that supports high biodiversity [ 2 ] and has a very important ecological function. However, the invasive plant has negatively impacted the ecosystem functioning and stability of the YRD [ 3 ]. The invasive plants gradually replaced native plants with faster growth rates and more vital reproductive abilities, which further caused changes in soil physicochemical properties and microbial community structure, posing a severe threat to biodiversity and nutrient cycling in the YRD [ 4 ].…”

“…Within this framework, RDA produces an ordination that summarizes the main patterns of variation in the response matrix which can be explained by explanatory variables. The matrix is commonly composed of bacterial community, or some specific taxon and the explanatory variables correspond to the soil physical or chemical properties (129,141).…”
