“…Several studies indicate that increased levels of oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers are common among persons with depression [ 69 , 70 ]. Our findings are consistent with a prior systematic review examining the effect of Tai Chi on inflammatory markers [ 71 ], with mixed results found after the intervention. In this study, we observed increases in IL-6 (ES = 0.59) and IL-10 (ES = 0.61) though these did not reach statistical significance due to the sample size, while no significant changes in TNF- α or BDNF were found (all p values >0.05).…”

“…Our findings are comparable with similar studies that assessed the effect of mind-body therapies using mixed interventions including meditation, Yoga and TQ [33,66]. Prior reviews that examined the effect of TQ on immunity and inflammation have reported no strong evidence of a favorable effect of TQ on inflammation [67] and the immune system [68] and insufficient evidence to support the clinical application of TQ to reduce infection [68,69]. These earlier reviews included fewer RCTs, and non-RCT studies, and a less comprehensive literature search which limits the conclusions made.…”

“…In addition, there is some evidence that tai chi alters DNA methylation to slow age‐related methylation losses or gains, suggesting it may impart beneficial epigenetic changes (Ren et al, 2012). Further studies have shown that tai chi impacts inflammatory markers involved in aging (Muñoz‐Vergara et al, 2023; You & Ogawa, 2019; You et al, 2020). In a three‐arm RCT of cognitive behavioral therapy vs. tai chi chih vs. sleep seminar, those in the tai chi arm had statistically significant reductions in proinflammatory cytokines and proinflammatory gene expression, as well as reduced activity of proinflammatory transcription factors (NF‐kB and activator protein 1) (Irwin et al, 2015).…”
