Effects of In Vitro Digestion on Anti-α-Amylase and Cytotoxic Potentials of Sargassum spp.

Abstract: This is the first study to examine the effects of in vitro digestion on biological activities of Sargassum spp., a broadly known brown seaweed for therapeutic potential. Three fractions (F1–F3) were obtained from hexane extract by column chromatography. Under in vitro simulated digestion, the anti-α-amylase capacity of F1 in oral and intestinal phases increases, while it significantly decreases in the gastric phase. The α-amylase inhibition of F2 promotes throughout all digestive stages while the activity of F… Show more

“…For example, GBR treated with B2 (75 mM salinity for 4 days) can be applied to produce a fermented functional beverage known as kombucha, which has become increasingly popular because of its health benefits [ 63 ]. On the other hand, considering the impacts of human digestion on targeted products, their bioaccessibility and bioavailability during the digestion process should be thoroughly examined in future studies [ 64 ].…”

“…However, the use of phytochemicals with α-amylase inhibition with cytotoxic activity is well established. 53–55 Our group is also currently working on understanding the mechanisms for compounds 5e , 5f and 5y with regards to their anticancer properties, and further assess if these properties might open up the scope for their utility as anticancer or antidiabetic agents via α-amylase inhibition.…”

“…To develop them for medical and pharmaceutical purposes as well as practical applications, multiple rigorous confirmation steps are necessary. Specifically, the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of natural compounds can be influenced by human digestion, necessitating scrutiny in forthcoming research (Un et al, 2022). Furthermore, the safety of these substances must undergo careful consideration and comprehensive assessment (Teschke and Xuan, 2020).…”
