Effects of inulin and lactulose on the intestinal morphology of calves

Abstract: For some time now prebiotics have been proposed to improve health by stimulation of beneficial bacteria in the intestine of humans and animals. The current study is aiming to show effects of feeding of either 2% inulin or 2% lactulose in milk replacer on performance and intestinal morphology of male Holstein-Friesian calves. After 20 weeks of feeding inulin led to significantly higher daily weight gains than lactulose while control animals ranged between the experimental feedings. Ingestion of milk replacer wa… Show more

“…We did not find statistically significant differences between the control and the treated groups in body weight gain either, which is at variance with the reports of some other researchers (Masanetz et al 2010;Król 2011;Ghosh and Mehla 2012;Heinrichs et al 2013), according to which inulin and MOS increased the daily body weight gain. The values measured and calculated by us correspond to the data of the literature, which vary widely as a result of the already mentioned differences in the feeding technologies.…”

“…The best known fructan is inulin, which is either obtained from the roots of chicory or produced synthetically from saccharose (Niness 1999). Inulin increased the body weight gain (BWG) and slightly improved the feed conversion ratio while decreased the length of intestinal villi and the number of goblet cells and proliferating cells and caused changes in physiological parameters of blood (Masanetz et al 2010(Masanetz et al , 2011.…”

“…It seems that the improvement in the health status of lambs fed a yeastsupplemented diet positively affected the course of metabolic processes (Milewski et al, 2007;Milewski and Sobiech, 2010). Such effect of prebiotics was also reported by Masanetz et al (2010Masanetz et al ( , 2011 who administered lactulose and inulin to calves. The results of those studies show a clear effect of prebiotics on certain parameters associated with animal health and performance, but effect differ between substances.…”

“…Interestingly, morphological investigations during the same study rather showed a slight decrease in the villus length and number of proliferative cells in the same group (Masanetz et al, 2010). Maybe the main MKI67 expression was not located in the epithelial layer, which was investigated by microscopy, but in other parts of the gut wall.…”
