Effects of Language, Insurance, and Race/Ethnicity on Measurement Properties of the PROMIS Physical Function Short Form 10a in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: While the PF10a has good measurement properties and is both practical and acceptable for implementation in routine clinical practice, we also found important differences across racial/ethnic groups and those with limited English proficiency that warrant further investigation. “…The validity and responsiveness of PROMIS‐PF10a item bank has been assessed in a real‐world clinical population highly enriched with patients with LHL and LEP . Constructs evaluated by the PF10a were less correlated with clinical measures in Chinese speakers and Hispanic subjects and were less sensitive to clinical improvements in Medicaid patients and Spanish speakers.…”

“…PROMIS PF short forms (4a, 6b, 8b, 10a, 12a, 16 [custom], and 20a) demonstrated moderate to strong correlations with other PF measures, including the PF‐10, the HAQ DI, WOMAC function subscale, pain, the 6‐Minute Walk Test, gait speed, global assessment of RA activity, the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire function subscale, the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, the Systemic Lupus Activity Questionnaire, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Physical Well‐Being subscale. Associations were evaluated in a variety of patient populations, including patients with RA, OA, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, SLE, and other chronic conditions affecting older adults (( r or ρ = 0.50‐0.90) .…”

“…Although studies have been performed examining the responsiveness of other domains of PROMIS (127–130), there have not been as many studies performed examining the responsiveness of the PROMIS Anxiety as it pertains to longitudinal clinical research. A recent study of RA showed that PROMIS measures, including the PROMIS Anxiety, improved with treatment after 12 months (102).…”

“…The responsiveness of the PROMIS Anxiety was also demonstrated in studies of SLE (112,131) and osteoarthritis (132). Studies have also shown that the PROMIS can discriminate between clinical groups, suggesting its suitability for use in clinical trials and comparative effectiveness studies (118,128–130,133–135).…”
