Effects of Laser Surface Texturing and Lubrication on the Vibrational and Tribological Performance of Sliding Contact

Abstract: Various textures are fabricated by a picosecond laser machine on the surfaces of circular stainless steel specimens. Vibrational and tribological effects of laser surface textures are investigated by means of a tribometer and a data acquisition and signal processing (DASP) system. Experimental results show that surface textures can reduce the coefficients of friction (COFs), enhance the wear resistance, and improve the dynamical performance of frictional surfaces. In this study, the surface with micro circular… Show more

“…Faced with this problem, researchers have tried to fabricate a regular texture [34] and enhance the interfacial bonding strength [45] to maintain a relatively long wear life. The effect of texture is to store lubricant and grinding debris [46][47][48] and to reduce the effective contact area of a friction pair surface [49], but not all texture can improve the friction performance, and a faulty design of texture would deteriorate both the friction and wear [50]. The effect of enhancing the interfacial bonding strength is to increase adhesion and form a stable transfer film.…”

“…The textured surface contributes to a reduction in the nominal contact area, diminishing direct surface contact and friction [16]. Furthermore, shallow texture features aid in increasing hydrodynamic pressure, promoting a load-carrying lubricating film between the contacting surfaces [17].…”

“…Recently, appropriate surface preparation to ensure the creation of lubricating pockets that retain the lubricant during the friction process has become increasingly important [13]. The basic texturing techniques for metal forming tools include hammering [14], laser texturing [15], electrical discharge machining [16] and burnishing [17]. Friction reduces tool life by wearing it out.…”
