Effects of Lentinus edodes mycelia on Dietary-Induced Atherosclerotic Involvement in Rabbit Aorta.

Abstract: Lentinus edodes mycelia lowers cholesterol levels and acts as an immunomodulator and tumor-inhibitor in animal models. Lentinus edodes mycelia contains eritadenine (C(9)H(11)O(4)N(5)) and glucans among other biological compounds. However, whether or not Lentinus edodes mycelia is anti-atherogenic remains unknown. We examined the effect of Lentinus edodes mycelia (L.E.M) on atherosclerosis in a rabbit model. Thirty-two Japanese white male rabbits were fed with 1.0% cholesterol for 8 weeks, then divided into gro… Show more

“…Atherosclerotic lesions were examined histologically after staining with oil red stain. 21) Statistical Analysis Significant differences between groups and within groups were compared with a one-way ANOVA. When a significant difference was accepted between groups, it was authorized using an unpaired t-test (two tail).…”

“…Oxidative stress stimulates the activation of HSCs, and substances with antioxidative activity, such as vitamin E, 3) glutathione, 4) and L-cysteine, 5) inhibit HSC activation, thus suppressing liver fibrosis. Recently, many antioxidants have been found in plants including tea, fruit, and vegetables.6) The edible mushroom Lentinus edodes (shiitake) contains several compounds with physiologic activity, such as immunopotentiation, 7) antiatherogenesis, 8) and an anti-HIV effect. 9) Mycelia of L. edodes can be cultured in a solid medium and the extract (L.E.M.)…”
