“…During the 2 yr of the study, the barley and wheat biomass yields (Table 2) were generally similar to or somewhat higher than those in the region (barley yields of 2.1–4.0 Mg ha −1 in 2001 and 2002, with adequate soil moisture condition [Buckley et al, 2011], and wheat yields of 2.7– 3.9 Mg ha −1 in 2002 and 2003 with dry growing seasons [Nikièma et al, 2013]). The typical recommended rate of N fertilizer for cereal crops in the study area is 75 kg N ha −1 (MAFRI, 2007).…”

“…A field experiment was conducted on a loamy sand soil overlying the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer (49°53′59′′ N, 99°20′59′′ W, and 383.5 m asl). The site, northwest of Carberry, consists of Orthic Black Chernozem (Udic Boroll) soils of the Fairland series developed on lacustrine deposits (Nikièma et al, 2013). These soils have a medium texture, with the upper 75‐ to 90‐cm soil layer classified as loamy sand, and the underlying layer as sandy loam to loam.…”
