Effects of Long-Term Treatment with Taurine in Mice Fed a High -Fat Diet

Abstract: Hypocholesterolemic effects of taurine in rats fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet are well established. However, there are few studies on long-term effects of taurine on cholesterol metabolism. In the present study, taurine was dissolved in drinking water and given to C57BL/6J mice during 6 months-feeding of a high fat diet. Taurine treatment significantly decreased serum LDL and VLDL cholesterol, while it significantly increased serum HDL cholesterol. In the liver, taurine decreased cholesteryl ester co… Show more

“…Interestingly, taurine level was formerly decreased by 60% in HFD group compared to Con group. The decrease may be attributed to the increasing conjunction of taurine with bile acid, whose synthesis was up-regulated in hyperlipidemia [ 34 ]. Thus elevated taurine levels in Cur2 group indicated that synthesis of cholesterol was suppressed after supplement of curcumin, as had been previously reported [ 11 ].…”

“…As a naturally occurring amino acid, taurine should display minimal side effects in the body. According to toxicity studies, it did not produce genotoxic, carcinogenic or teratogenic effects [16,[26], [27], [28]]. However, a few studies reported tolerable limits of taurine considering the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL).…”

“…Previous clinical studies have reported that taurine does not induce genotoxic, carcinogenic or teratogenic effects in stroke or heart ischemia patients 32 34 . In Murakami et al’s study 35 , no specific side effects were observed when C57BL/6J mice were treated with taurine for 6 months. Our study also revealed no severe side effects in rodents despite the long-term use of taurine for 7 months.…”
