Effects of low carbon supply chain practices on environmental sustainability

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the relationships between low carbon supply chain practices and their relationships with environmental sustainability (ES) and the economic performances (EP) of firms. The study also includes an examination of the low carbon supply chain practices that are utilized by Indian manufacturing firms. Design/methodology/approach Through a questionnaire-based survey, the data received from 83 Indian manufacturing firms was analyzed using a variance-based s… Show more

“…GSCM is a strategy that manages the flow of materials along the value chain through different stages such as acquisition, production and distribution to protect the environment by safeguarding natural resources and reducing global warming and carbon emission (Jabbour and Jabbour, 2016; Vanalle et al , 2017; Raut et al , 2019). The scope of emission reductions may be identified and addressed in every aspect of the supply chain including sourcing, inventory control, transportation, network design, and contract design (Tachizawa and Wong, 2015; Das and Jhakharia, 2019). Concerning GSCM practices, the present study adopts the classification of Zhu et al (2013), who proposed 5 practices divided into two main groups: Internal GSCM practices: internal environmental management (IEM) and eco-design (ED) which can be implemented and managed by an individual manufacturer; External GSCM practices: green purchasing (GP), co-operation with customer (CC), and investment recovery (IR), which involves cooperation with supply chain partners.…”

“…And, it is also imperative to understand how economic, operational and environmental performance influence each other (Choudhary and Sangwan, 2019). Similarly, managers and policy makers in India are skeptical about the outcome of these GSCM practices (Das and Jhakharia, 2019). Managers in Indian organizations are also concerned about gaining true sustainability (Mohanty and Prakash, 2014).…”

“…Compliance orientation than Green Chemistry investments in Generics leads to increased supply chain costs and environmental risks (Veleva and Berkelay, 2017). However, it has also been seen that low carbon supply chain practices improve environmental sustainability (Das and Jharkharia, 2019). Supply chain operation format determines the measurement process for performance evaluation of the supply chain (Remko and Hoek, 1998).…”

“…The concept of the LCSC is derived from green supply chain and environmentally responsible supply chain, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption in supply chain management (Hsu et al, 2014;Das and Jharkharia, 2019). Unlike green supply chains, LCSCs are designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve energy efficiency (Jassim et al, 2018).…”
