Effects of low-level laser therapy on soft and hard tissue healing after endodontic surgery

Abstract: The aim of this prospective study was to examine possible benefits of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on soft and hard tissue healing after endodontic surgery. Seventy-six endo-surgery cases on maxillary incisors were included. The patients were assigned randomly into control and laser groups. In the laser group, gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser irradiation (810 nm, 129 mW, 3.87 J/cm) was performed immediately after surgery and daily for postoperative 7 days from buccal and palatal surfaces (5 min… Show more

“…The most probable factor contributing to post-operative endodontic pain is basically related to the release of inflammatory mediators (ie prostaglandins, bradykinin and cytokines); it can directly excite/sensitise nerve endings and indirectly trigger the release of algesic mediators. 3 A number of pharmacological or non-pharmacological strategies, such as drug prescription 4,5 or, technique/instrument/material selection, [6][7][8] laser/photobiomodulation therapy, 9,10 and occlusal reduction, 11,12 have been suggested to employ by clinicians for the management of post-operative endodontic pain.…”

“…In a clinical observation, PBM with NIR 808 nm laser has shown to reduce inflammation, seroma, and pain along with improved cicatrization in bariatric surgical wound . In another study, 810 nm laser accelerated soft and hard tissue healing after endodontic surgery and exhibited favorable effects on pain and life‐quality of patients . PBM with 830 nm laser before high‐intensity exercise led to an increased removal of blood lactate, reduced muscle damage, along with fast muscle recovery between exercise sessions in athletes .…”

“…On the contrary, opioids have been misused and pose a well-recognised public health issue (Weekes, 2016). Recently lasers are being employed to reduce pulpal in lammation and pain (Metin et al, 2018). Culturing to know the de inite root cause for the pain is seldom done in routine practice.…”
