Effects of Low-Moderate Load High-Velocity Resistance Training on Physical Performance of Under-20 Futsal Players

Abstract: Resistance training (RT) is an effective methodology to improve physical performance of athletes. However, up to now, no studies have addressed the RT benefits in under-20 futsal players. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of six weeks of RT with high-velocity movements, low-to-moderate loads, and low volume on physical performance of under-20 futsal players. A total of 21 players were divided into two groups: A control group (CG, n = 10) and a RT group (RTG, n = 11). The RTG performed two w… Show more

“…Short-sprint performance was improved in soccer, futsal [113,159,171] and rugby union [103,129,175,176] but not for rugby league [71,72,84,93,104] or rugby sevens [75,182] ). Therefore, these subgroup analyses were not considered.…”

“…Studies were conducted in soccer (n = 96), rugby league (n = 5) [71,72,84,93,104], rugby union (n = 4) [103,129,175,176], futsal (n = 3) [113,159,171] rugby sevens (n = 2) [75,182], Australian football (n = 1) [162] and mixed football codes (n = 10) [40, 42, 64, 105, 114-116, 141, 153, 155]. No studies using Gaelic football or American football players satisfied the inclusion criteria.…”

“…The third session was used to measure the change of direction speed (CODS) and the anaerobic endurance. Before each session, we applied a warm-up protocol of 5-min submaximal run, followed by 3-5 sprints with progressive increase in velocity, 2 sets of 5 repetitions of vertical jumps, and dynamic stretching (high knees, butt kicks, closed and open knees, hamstring kicks, leg swing towards the opposite side and walking hip, quadriceps, and hamstring stretch) (D. L. Marques et al, 2019). Anthropometry and CMJ were measured inside the club facilities, while the other tests were conducted on an artificial-turf soccer field.…”

“…From a stand position with the feet shoulder width apart and the hands on the hips, we instructed the participants to perform a rapid downward movement into a squat position, immediately followed by a rapid vertical jump as high as possible. Three CMJ were performed, interspersed by 30-s rest (D. L. Marques et al, 2019). A specific warm-up of 3 submaximal CMJ was performed, with a 10-s rest between repetitions.…”

“…These adaptations should be further understood in some specific popular exercises, such as team sports. Among these, indoor soccer emerges as an intermittent sport that requires high-intensity short-duration activities of approximately 3 s, such as sprints, changes of direction, dribbles, jumps, shots, tackling, and short periods of recovery (20–30 s) during the game ( Marques et al, 2019 ). It is one of the most physically demanding team sports, taking into account the concentric and eccentric muscular movements of the lower limbs that were a consequence of the specific actions of the game ( Nunes et al, 2018 ; Torres-Torrelo et al, 2018 ).…”
