To explore the effect of different types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) decomposition on nutrient cycling pathways and the microbial loop, four lakes with different DOM sources were investigated monthly. In Lake Tangxun, Dolichospermum decay released highly labile dissolved organic nitrogen into the water column. This induced bacterial organic nitrogen decomposition, as indicated by the increased abundance of gltB, gltD, gdh, and glnA as well as aminopeptidase activity. Genes associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium further fueled ammonium accumulation, driving Microcystis blooms in the summer. In Lake Zhiyin, fish bait deposits (high nitrogen, similar to Dolichospermum detritus) also caused Microcystis blooms. Detritus from Microcystis decomposition then produced high levels of labile dissolved organic phosphorus, inducing phosphatase activity and increasing soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations from September to April in Lakes Tangxun and Zhiyin. The high refractory DOM from macrophytes in Lake Houguan led to insufficient nutrient availability, leading to nutrient mutualism between algae and bacteria. The high levels of labile dissolved organic carbon from terrestrial detritus in Lake Yandong increased bacterial biomass and production, resulting in low chlorophyll content due to the competitive relationship between algal and bacterial nutrient requirements. Therefore, different DOM compositions induce unique connections among available nutrients, algae, and bacteria in the microbial loop.

Macrophytes are considered key components of aquatic ecosystems and they also provide multiple benefits for humans. In this review, I identified and exemplified 26 types of ecosystem services provided by macrophytes. The most important supporting services provided by these plants are related to nutrient cycling and provisioning of habitat, but macrophytes also participate in water cycling and gases production. The presence of macrophytes and their activity enhance water purification and disease control which are important regulating services. Provisioning services are provided in the form of food at the local and global scale (e.g., rice), fiber, biochemicals, natural medicine and ornamental resources. Cultural services are provided in the form of spiritual and religious artifacts and local knowledge systems of communities which depend on macrophytes for surviving. Other cultural services are associated with educational activities, art inspiration, esthetic values in aquatic gardens and ponds, uses for leisure, recreation and ecotourism. There is evidence that the efficiency of ecosystem functioning, the provision of ecosystem services and ecosystem stability is enhanced by macrophyte diversity. Because macrophyte communities provide important benefits for humans, their conservation and restoration, where necessary, are important for human well-being.

Aim To report possible academic experiences as strategic contributions to help manage reservoirs ensuring multipurpose uses. Methods In this opinion article, we point out and discuss academic activities that are usually developed to assess environmental studies in reservoirs. Results Experience shows that various contributions can be highlighted in reservoir management, as well as direct contributions for decision-making of the environmental authorities involved, such as: i) development of experimental procedures to solve specific problems; ii) sampling planning activities; iii) analysis, integration and synthesis of data; iv) qualification of human resources, etc. It is important to mention that all academic activities reported in this article are potentially publishable in scientific journals (knowledge areas: environmental management, limnology, sanitation, public health and aquatic ecology). Conclusions According to the related activities, we identified strong academic orientation (water quality determination, greenhouse gas inventories and water quality simulation using mathematical models, aquatic macrophyte decomposition and growth experiments) for reservoir management.
