Effects of magnetic field therapy after taping application on pain and function of patients with knee osteoarthritis

Abstract: [Purpose] The purpose of study was to investigate the effect of taping applied before magnetic field therapy. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty patients who diagnosed with knee arthritis by a specialist in the rehabilitation department were divided into three groups using the random allocation method. The control group received 15 min general physiotherapy. For the experimental group 1, non-elastic taping was applied to the medial side of the knee after general physiotherapy, followed by a 15 min magnetic field th… Show more

“…Despite the increasing scientific interest and the number of researchers investigating the effectiveness of Kinesio Taping for patients with knee osteoarthritis in recent years, the studies concerning its effectiveness regarding pain relief and functional improvement report conflicting results. 9 17 Recent reviews and meta-analyses conclude that this method could be helpful in knee osteoarthritis management; however, small sample size and/or lack of blinding and/or no follow-up and other methodological inadequacies are the common limitations of available studies. Therefore, the decision concerning effectiveness of Kinesio Taping for knee osteoarthritis symptom control and function improvement is inconclusive and has to be warranted by further randomized double-blinded studies.…”

“…The Kinesio taping method was variable, and the most commonly used type of this method; the Y-shaped tape applied over the quadriceps and wrapped around the patella was used in 12 of the 15 included studies. 10,11,12,14,16 –23 Among those 12 studies, 3 studies used one Y-shaped tape, 10,20,21 3 studies used two Y-shaped tapes, 11,14,22 1 study used three Y-shaped tapes, 17 and 5 studies combined the Y-shaped tape with other types of taping shape. 12,16,18,19,23 The frequency of Kinesio tape retaping ranged from daily to weekly and the total duration of taping treatment ranged from three days to six weeks after initial taping.…”

“…Eight studies used thermotherapies, 10,11,15,17 –20,24 and six studies used electrotherapies. 11,15,17 –20 Two studies used manual therapy, 10,18 and eight studies used exercise training in the treatment programs. 11,13,14,16,20 –23 Moreover, seven studies com-bined more than two types of physical therapies.…”
