Effects of marine protected areas on recruitment processes with special reference to Mediterranean littoral ecosystems

Abstract: Although site-attached fish can be expected to increase in abundance in marine protected areas (MPAs), there is little known about recruitment effects. The present work reviews concepts and field evidence for enhancement of recruitment of species in MPAs, focusing geographically on the Mediterranean littoral because of its long history of intensive fishery exploitation, but drawing on evidence from studies on recruitment processes in general on MPAs both in the Mediterranean and elsewhere. We considered recrui… Show more

“…Literature on MPA design and management highlights the importance of: (1) connectivity when reserves are small and representation among eco-regions (Adulla et al 2008;Guarderas et al 2008;Gaines et al 2010); (2) suitable management regimes (e.g., Friedlander et al 2003;Vella et al 2009;Olsen et al 2011); and (3) MPA distribution vis-á-vis areas of cumulative impacts (e.g., Planes et al 2000;Coll et al 2011). The first issue assumes principles of biological conservation, especially for the marine environment (Gaines et al 2010).…”

“…Such categorization is useful for regional planning and for the creation of PA networks including sites of different types, and levels of protections (Planes et al 2000;Bishop et al 2004;López-Ornat et al 2007). Identifying gaps in coverage vis-á-vis physical environmental attributes and protection levels can advance the designation of representative systems of MPAs as required by international agreements and can help identify areas for networks of related reserves (for example, within a similar ecoregion).…”

“…Similarly, Tunesi et al (2006) did not record a clear "reserve effect" after five years of protection in spite of significant differences in the size of the target species. That lack of results could be due to the critical lack of empirical knowledge about MPAs and the unsuccessful conservation measures made (Planes et al, 2000;Fraschetti et al, 2002;Claudet & Fraschetti, 2010), or a lack of knowledge in important scientific facts such as knowledge about dispersal schemes, the geographical range of the population, an appropriate experimental design, and environmental evaluation (Claudet & Pelletier, 2004). Establishment of appropriate MPA designation within the proper context such as a large-scale marine spatial planning has to be made (Agardy et al, 2011).…”
