Effects of Marital Status and Shift Work on Family Function among Registered Nurses

Abstract: This study aims to assess the interactive effect of marital status and shift work on family function. A population-based sample of 1,438 nurses between the ages of 20–45 yr was recruited from Taiwan during the period from July 2005 to April 2006 using a mailed questionnaire. The self-administered questionnaire contained information about demographic data, work status, shift work schedule, and the Family APGAR (Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve) Scale, to evaluate family function. “…This result is parallel to results from other cohort studies (Jansen et al, 2003;Eurofound, 2016). In line with this study, Tai et al (2014) reported that shift workers with night shifts had a poorer work-family fit than shift workers with morning and evening shifts only. The questions or scales used for assessing work-life conflict or work-life balance have varied in different studies, which makes comparisons challenging.…”

“…When referring to earlier studies, the same concept (work-family conflict/workfamily interference/work-family interference/poor family function) as that in the original article is used. In a nurse sample, non-night and rotating shift workers were at a significantly increased risk of poor family function compared to day workers (Tai et al, 2014). Consistent results show that a high number of weekends or Sundays at work increases work-family conflict (Camerino et al, 2010;Greubel et al, 2016;Wirtz et al, 2011;Wirtz and Nachreiner, 2010).…”

“…For certain extent, it causes job dissatisfaction and frustration among nurses. Other studies in Thailand also presented nurses as an individual, who have been given power and opportunity to acquire good spirit, more enthusiasm, less stress and more commitment in the task (Antunes et al, 2010;Spiegel et al, 2009;Stimpfel et al, 2012;Kunaviktikul et al 2015;Trinkoff et al, 2011;Shu-Yu et al, 2014;Makabe at al., 2015;Smith et al, 1999;Deguchi et al, 2016).…”

“…The conceptual framework has proposed certain job related factors among nurses as shown in Figure 1. -Yu et al (2014) mentioned that there is no relationship between the marital status and work-life balance. Even though the married population dominated the study, it did not present the factor for influencing work-life balance.…”
