Effects of maternal B12 supplementation on neurophysiological outcomes in children: a study protocol for an extended follow-up from a placebo randomised control trial in Bangalore, India

Abstract: IntroductionVitamin B12 deficiency is highly prevalent in pregnant Indian women. Neuropsychological tests have shown an association between low maternal vitamin B12 status and poorer cognitive performances in the offspring, although findings from these studies have been inconsistent. Vitamin B12 has an important role in the formation of myelin which is important for the transmission speed of neural impulses and myelination in the central nervous system has been linked to cognition. Assessing neurophysiological… Show more

“…In this respect caloric malnutrition has been associated with reduced capacity to learn in children 31 34 . Likewise, fruit and vegetables deliver key micronutrients that play a role in various aspects of neuronal physiology from axonal outgrowth to synaptic plasticity 35 38 and micronutrient deficiencies have been shown to impact cognitive and mental health outcomes 36 , 39 , 40 . While the variety of fruit and vegetables had directional trends with spectral metrics, they were not as significant.…”

“…In addition to supplementation, participants in the intervention arm were also advised on a prescribed dietary and lifestyle-based intervention developed in the same community. The dosage for vitamin D and vitamin B12 was similar to that used in other clinical trials for vitamin B-12 [18,19] and for vitamin D [5], although for the latter the dosage interval was longer.…”
