Effects of membrane bilayer reorganizations on the 2103 cm−1 Raman spectral CD stretching mode linewidths in dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine‐d54 (DMPC‐d54) liposomes

Abstract: The sensitivity of the bandwidths of the 2103 cm-' symmetric methylene CD2 stretching modes to lateral chain-chain interactions and to intrachain rotamer formation is demonstrated for membrane bilayer systems composed of deuterated phospholipids. Temperature profiles, constructed from three separate linewidth parameters, illustrate the effects of bilayer rearrangements both in pure DMPC& liposomes and in DMPC-d,, multilayers containing melittin in a lipid :polypeptide mole ratio of 14 : 1. Evidence is presente… Show more

“…The symmetric and antisymmetric CD 2 stretching modes ( s CD 2 and a CD 2 ) arising from the deuterated fatty acid are observed at 2100 and 2175 cm Ϫ1 , respectively. This region also includes the symmetric CD 3 stretching mode ( s CD 3 ), which gives rise to two components at 2120 and 2075 cm Ϫ1 , this splitting being attributed to an interaction with the overtone of the asymmetric CD 3 deformation mode at 1058 cm Ϫ1 (Mendelsohn et al, 1976;Bryant et al, 1982). The C-H stretching region between 2750 and 3100 cm Ϫ1 shows a similar profile to those recorded for equimolar mixtures of ceramides and cholesterol.…”

“…1 A and B). C-D X bonds of various types, including C-D 2 and symmetrical and asymmetrical C-D 3 bonds originating from various biomolecules, reportedly produce Raman bands between 2,013 and 2,300 cm −1 (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). Furthermore, modeling of the Raman peaks induced by the C-D X bond using deuterated palmitic acid as the model compound also predicted peaks in this region (SI Appendix, Fig.…”

“…and liquid-crystalline phases. Although the band assignments, intensities, and frequency shifts have been previously reported and discussed (Levin, 1984;Bryant et al, 1982), a brief review of the salient vibrational parameters in these two spectral regions is necessary in order to discuss the molecular dynamics of the two lipids. In Figure 1A, three major Raman features are identified for the low-temperature gel phase of DHPC.…”
