Effects of methylene blue, indigo carmine solution and autologous erythrocyte suspension on formation of adhesions after injection into rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine whether autologous erythrocyte suspension can be used as a dye for evaluation of tubal patency and whether it has any advantages over methylene blue or indigo carmine solutions. Reproductively healthy female nulliparous Wistar Albino rats (n = 30), aged 6 months, mass 165-195 g, were assigned randomly to three groups. Rats received a 1 ml i.p. injection of 5% (w/v) methylene blue solution (methylene blue group: n = 10), 5% (w/v) indigo carmine solution (indigo carmine gro… Show more

“…It has been implicated in several medical aspects ranging from alcoholism to photodynamical therapy. In recent years several investigations have appeared related to coagulation factors 2, DNA damage 3 and binding 4, relaxing effects of venoms 5, photocatalysis 6, antiviral activities of HIV 7, cirrhosis 8, hepatopulmonary syndrome 9, reproduction and fertility 10, etc. MB has been implicated also as an emergency aid in underwater diving‐related accidents 11.…”

“… 29 , 30 Moreover, NO donors, such as L-arginine and spermine NONOate, have also been shown to reduce adhesion formation. 31 33 Furthermore, its mechanism of action cannot be related to a reduction in free radicals since other antioxidant substances (e.g., allopurinol, super oxide dismutase, vitamin E) are not as effective as methylene blue. 34 , 35 Other studies suggest that methylene blue reduces intraabdominal adhesion formation by enhancing peritoneal fibrinolytic activity.…”
