Effects of Mindfulness on Conceptual Modeling Performance: A Series of Experiments

Abstract: Context. Mindfulness is a meditation technique whose main goal is keeping the mind calm and educating attention by focusing only on one thing at a time, usually breathing. The reported benefits of its continued practice can be of interest for Software Engineering students and practitioners, especially in tasks like conceptual modeling, in which concentration and clearness of mind are crucial. Goal. In order to evaluate whether Software Engineering students enhance their conceptual modeling performance after se… Show more

“…In our case, after having to report two internal replications [26], [135] of a baseline experiment [27] and finding some problems applying Carver's guidelines [3]-especially about reporting changes between replications-we decided to carry out an SMS on replications in SE as a first step before performing an SLR. In order to know the trends and emerging topics, and also to identify research niches that facilitate and foster replications, we have reviewed studies that report at least one replication in SE in recent years.…”

“…For this first case study, we selected three families of human-oriented experiments dealing with (i) the effect of mindfulness on conceptual modeling performance (Mind) [9][10][11], (ii) requirements elicitation (Req) [3], and (iii) code testing techniques (Test) [36,39,40], due to our familiarity with these topics. In the latter family, the deterioration of internal validity is noticeable, as shown in Fig.…”

“…This lack of detail in the specification of changes leads to some problems in carrying out new replications, since the replicator has difficulties not only in deciding which aspects of the experimental setup are best suited to the new environment, but also in avoiding mistakes made in previous experiments that threatened their validity [5,16]. On the other hand, a proper knowledge of the changes allows a better meta-analysis of the family, since they impact on issues such as the definition of moderator variables, the definition of the aggregated family design, or the choice of the most appropriate analysis, among others [10].…”

“…Many other studies were conducted in which students were trained in these MM practices as an anchor for attention, so that they could sustain their attention on sensations and emotions without being distracted ( Baird et al., 2014 ). Generally, implementations of these techniques enhanced students’ ability to sustain attention which improved short-term academic and task performance ( Zeidan et al., 2010 ; Stein, 2016 ; Brown et al., 2016 ; Bernardez et al., 2020 ; Shapiro et al., 2008 ).…”
