Effects of Mindfulness on Stimulating Hope and Recovery among People with Schizophrenia

Abstract: Background: Hope has an essential role in the recovery journey for people with schizophrenia. Current studies showed that people with schizophrenia reported having low hope. There is growing evidence that mindfulness has favorable effects on mental health in populations with chronic illness, including people with schizophrenia. However, the studies evaluating effects of mindfulness on hope and recovery for people with schizophrenia are limited.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of mindfulness on … Show more

“…Hope and mindfulness were moderately to strongly correlated in our and others’ studies (Astuti et al 2020 ; Lu et al 2020 ; Munoz et al 2018 ), but they were both uniquely linked to sense coherence and changes in internalizing and externalizing behaviors . However, although multi-component interventions are not uncommon (Hendriks et al 2020 ), one that enhances both hope and mindfulness is relatively rare (Thornton et al 2014 ).…”

“…Another study from Vietnam mentioned that marriage was associated with an inferior subjective quality of life (Humphries et al, 2018), but having a stable job though was an indicator of recovery. In the demographic data from 20 articles, the number of unemployed PWS was more than 50% (Astuti et al, 2020; Chee, 2009; Dahlan et al, 2013, 2014; Humphries et al, 2017, 2018; Idaiani, 2015; Jaapar et al, 2020; Kurihara et al, 2011; Loh et al, 2016; Marutani et al, 2020; Mubarak, 2005, 2006; Munikanan et al, 2017; Ngoc et al, 2016; Norlelawati et al, 2015; Nurasikin et al, 2013; Osman et al, 2009; Othman et al, 2013; Phanthunane et al, 2010).…”

“…Unfortunately, only two studies have documented the effects of MBI on recovery from illness in people with schizophrenia, so the current study cannot determine the optimum amount of mindfulness performs to achieve the best patient results in trials and thus offer regulation to therapists in determining the best proper form of home exercises for users. The first study, which looked at the effects of mindfulness on hope and recovery in patients with schizophrenia, discovered that the intervention group had a higher mean score recovery following mindfulness therapy than the control group (Astuti et al, 2020). The second study used a pretest/posttest design with two groups (training and control) to examine the efficacy of MBI training on increasing functional recovery and insight in schizophrenia patients.…”
