Effects of moderate-fat (from monounsaturated fat) and low-fat weight-loss diets on the serum lipid profile in overweight and obese men and women

Abstract: A moderate-fat weight-loss and weight-maintenance diet improves the cardiovascular disease risk profile on the basis of favorable changes in lipids and lipoproteins. There is merit in recommending a moderate-fat weight-loss diet.

“…In a recent meta-analyses, a mean body weight reduction of 2.61 kg (P > 0.05) was verified in energy-restricted nut-enriched diets (18). A hypocaloric moderate-fat diet that included convention peanuts (whole, butter, and oil) significantly reduced body weight but with no difference compared to a hypocaloric low-fat peanut-free diet (19).…”

“…Extreme diets, either very high in carbohydrates or very low in carbohydrates in which energy intake is similarly restricted, have been successful at achieving weight loss. 57 For example, the Pritikin Program, a lifestyle intervention program that includes a high-complex-carbohydrate, highfiber (35 to 40 g/1000 kcal), very low-fat (Ͻ10% kcal), and low-cholesterol (Ͻ25 mg/d) diet and exercise component, has been shown to reduce weight, TC, and TG by 5%, 21%, and 50%, respectively. 58 Participants are satiated on high-fiber/ low-energy density diets that are hypocaloric.…”

“…Dietary patterns within these ranges for carbohydrate and fat have been shown to promote weight loss, 57,60,61 lower TG levels, 57,61 maintain HDL-C levels, 57 and promote maintenance of reduced body weight. 57,60 In overweight patients, reduced-fat, high-carbohydrate diets have proven effective for weight loss, 58,62,63 the prevention of type 2 diabetes, 65 and MetS. 66 Of note, a low-fat high carbohydrate diet followed over a period of Ϸ7 years does not result in weight gain in postmenopausal women.…”

“…The moderate fat diet (from monounsaturated fat) on the other hand did not increase TG during weight maintenance period (9). Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Croatia experience lower incidences of heart disease because of their popular high monounsaturated / low unsaturated fat diet (1,10).…”

“…transportation. For example, high monounsaturated fat diets (≥35% of total energy from fat) have been shown to affect lipoprotein levels more favorably compared to a low fat diet (less than 20% of total calorie intake from fat) (8,9). In a parallel study design conducted by Pelkman and colleagues, 53 obese subjects were randomly assigned to either a low fat (20% energy from fat) or moderate fat (35% of energy from monounsaturated fat) weight loss diet throughout a 10-week period.…”
