Effects of mouth rehabilitation with removable complete dentures on stimulus perception and the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oris muscle

Abstract: Mouth rehabilitation with removable complete dentures decreased oral discomfort and, depending on the oral function, decreased or increased EMG activity of the orbicularis oris muscle. In addition, the lower fascicle was more active than the upper fascicle during rest and most functional activities.

“…However, the previous experience with CDs did not affect ( p = 0.15) the masticatory performance of edentulous patients treated with new dentures. It seems that the placement of a new CD, although minor changes have been made in comparison to the previous one, will require a minimum period of time for patient functional adaptation . In this case, the oral musculature will have to establish new memory patterns.…”

This period may vary according to the muscular ability and capacity.…”

“…The present study has some limitations, such as the impossibility of controlling all variables that may interfere with results; the absence of a control group, such as patients who did not receive new dentures [39]; and a short period of patient analysis. However, the initial condition served as a control of the rehabilitation.…”

“…We chose the specified periods of evaluation for our study based on previous research, 12 14 taking into consideration the early response of patients to treatment (complete dentures fabricated by conventional or simplified methods) at one month and after a minimum period of time for functional adaptation after placement of a new pair of complete dentures (three‐ and six‐month periods) 38 . During the adaptation period, the oral musculature will have to establish new memory patterns, and this period may vary according to muscular ability and capacity 39 .…”
