Effects of N fertilization on yield for low‐input production in Spanish wheat landraces (Triticum turgidum L. and Triticum monococcum L.)

Abstract: A core subset of Spanish durum wheat landraces was evaluated at two nitrogen levels (80 and 220 kg/ha) to identify landrace genotypes adapted to low N production. Yield differences were statistically significant between N levels and among genotypes at both levels. Fiftyone per cent of the landraces yielded significantly more at low than at high N (low-N varieties) while 26% had a positive (high-N varieties) and 23% an indifferent (indifferent-N varieties) response to N fertilizer. No significant agromorphologi… Show more

“…turgidum and dicoccon , some MTAs for DH were also associated with other traits, as the MTA for DM in turgidum , and three for the number of SS and one for SL in dicoccon . The positive correlation of DH with DM and number of SS detected in our collection and in a previous study [69] supports the influence of DH on these MTAs and that earliness alleles can reduce spikelet number in southern Europe [70]. In dicoccon landraces, the adaptive western-eastern pattern detected in the MTAs for DH was also identified in the MTAs for the number of SS, SL and PG, which confirmed the geographic substructure east–west previously identified in that subspecies [16].…”

“…Some researchers have tried to explain the mechanism of crop yield increase from the application of N fertilizer through the photosynthetic regulation (Bindraban, 1999;Miranzadeh et al, 2011). Regulation of the photosynthetic physiological processes of plants by N fertilizer, will ultimately effect on yield and water use efficiency (Ruiz et al, 2008). Therefore, understanding the photosynthetic regulation on yield reduction by reduce N fertilization would give us important references for N management.…”

“…The varieties were sown in a randomised-complete-block design under rainfed conditions at Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. Four cultivars were used as test varieties: 'Senatore Capelli', 'Cocorit-71' and 'Yavaros-79' (described by Ruiz et al, 2008) and 'Don Pedro', released in 1990 and cultivated in the South of Spain.…”

“…This sample set was evaluated during two seasons (2001-2002 and 2003-2004) and at two N rates in 2004. The N experiment was described by Ruiz et al (2008). The varieties were sown in a randomised-complete-block design under rainfed conditions at Alcalá de Henares, Madrid.…”
