“…However, it was found that the fracture toughness decreases gradually as the Cr 2 C 3 /VC content increases, as shown in Figure 9 . As well known, the fracture toughness is inversely proportional to the hardness and thus the fracture toughness decreases as the hardness increases [ 39 ]. Among all studied samples, sample 1# has the highest fracture toughness of 9.88 MPa.m 1/2 due to the lowest hardness.…”

“…It is noted in Figure 3C, the (Nb, W)C solid solution appeared in the WC-8(Co-Ni-Nb) sintered sample, which is due to the solubility of WC in NbC could reach 38 wt.% at 1300°C. 25 However, the solubility of NbC in the binder phase at room temperature is very low. 26 Therefore, the WC phase will be partially dissolved in NbC to form a (Nb, W)C solid solution.…”

“…For TW10, cracks mainly extend along grain boundaries of WC. It is well known that cracks mainly propagate along WC/WC and WC/ Co in ultrafine WC-Co because the fracture energy for transgranular fracture is higher than that of intergranular fracture [8,29]. It is difficult to observe the cracks passing through (Ti, W)C phases due to the low (Ti, W)C content, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Some studies have reported that adding some cubic carbides (TiC, TaC, NbC) to WC-Co brings out the (M, W)C (M = Ti/Ta/Nb) solid solution [6,7]. Gao et al [8] reported that adding NbC in WC-Co causes W dissolved into NbC grains to form (Nb,W)C. TiC is a kind of stable carbide with higher hardness than WC. The addition of TiC effectively increases the hardness and improves wear resistance of WC-Co materials.…”
