Effects of NPK Fertilizer on Tuber Yield, Starch Content and Dry Matter Accumulation of White Guinea Yam (Dioscorea rotundata) in a Forest Alfisol of South Western Nigeria

Abstract: Field trials designed to investigate the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the yield, starch and dry matter content of white guinea yam were conducted over a four year period in south western Nigeria. The optimum level of nitrogen for successful production of white guinea yam was 35 kg ha"" 1 in a forest Alfisol that had been under cultivation for at least two years. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium had no significant effect on starch content, but large applications of phosphorus and potassium… Show more

“…A positive response to N P K fertilization was found in water yam ( D. alata ) (Igwilo 1989), but there was either a response to nitrogen (Lyonga 1984;Kayode 1985) or no response to fertilizer in white Guinea yam ( D. rotundata) (Igwilo 1989). In the few studies on nutrient deficiencies in D. rotundata, the omission of N, K, Ca or S led to poor growth in sand culture (Gaztambide and Cibes 1975).…”

“…Although the soils used for the study in 2005 and 2006 had adequate K for yam production, they were deficient in N, P, and soil organic matter (SOM) as required for good growth in yam. Yam will likely respond to fertilizer application on soil with less 0.1% N, less than 10 mg kg −1 available P, less than 0.15 cmol kg −1 K, and less than 1.7% SOM (Obigbesan, 1981;Kayode, 1985). The response of yam genotypes to fertilizer application in 2006 was clear evidence that the initial soils status could not supply adequate nutrient needed for good performance.…”

“…Oliveira et al (2005) verificaram redução da matéria seca e aumento nos teores de amido em função do emprego de esterco bovino e de galinha que seriam fontes de nitrogênio. O mesmo foi descrito por Kayode, (1985) que verificou a influência de fertilizantes químicos no teor de amido ao se aplicar formulado com NPK.…”
