Effects of Paecilomyces tenuipes Cultivated in Egg Yolk on Lipid Metabolism in Rats on a High Fat-Cholesterol Diet

Abstract: We investigated the effects of the fruiting bodies of cultivated Paecilomyces tenuipes grown on egg yolk (PTE) on lipid and antioxidant metabolisms. Forty 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high fat/high cholesterol diet (control) or a high fat/high cholesterol diet with 1%, 3%, or 5% PTE for 5 weeks. PTE was found to significantly lower plasma total lipid, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the atherogenic index, compared with the control. Hepatic total lipid and total cho… Show more

“…The anti-depressant, anti-tumor and immunomodulatory activities of P. tenuipes have been confirmed in previous studies (10,11). Furthermore, P. tenuipes has been demonstrated to improve lipid profiles and lipid peroxidation (12 The present study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and anti-inflammatory activities of P. tenuipes N45 aqueous extract (PTNE) in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model. Following 4 weeks of treatment with PTNE, several indexes associated with oxidation resistance, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and anti-nephropathy activities were measured.…”

“…Mushrooms are commonly used as folk medicines in East Asia, and many research results, such as anticancer [22], anti-inflammatory. and metabolic disease-improving effects have been reported [23,24]. In a previous study, PE showed inhibitory effects of PSA expression in LNCaP cells [15].…”

“…tenuipes, an entomogenous fungus on the larvae of lepidoptera, is widely used in traditional nutritious medicine in the Orient (Lee et al, 2006). In spite of lots of reports on the beneficial activities of Paecilomyces species, there have also been several studies on the toxicities of Paecilomyces species, especially P. sinclairii, including acute oral toxicity studies in dogs, subchronic oral toxicity study in rats and a series of genotoxicity studies (Ahn et al, 2003(Ahn et al, , 2004aJeong et al, 2012Jeong et al, , 2013.…”
