Effects of percutaneous vertebroplasty on respiratory parameters in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures

Abstract: Background: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) often occur in patients with osteoporosis. These fractures can also lead to postural changes. Several studies have shown that patients with vertebral compression fractures have a restrictive pattern in their pulmonary function. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is the standard treatment for vertebral compression fractures, with the benefits of pain relief and enhancement of vertebral stability for partially collapsed vertebral bodies. However, the e… Show more

“…The number of patients with osteoporosis vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) is concurrently increasing, with the main symptoms being lower back pain and spinal deformity ( 2 ). In additon, OVCFs patients are predisposed to multiple comorbidities, including pulmonary dysfunction, bladder contraction disorder, weight loss, anxiety and depression ( 3 , 4 ). Furthermore, neurological impairments is also detected in OVCFs patients.…”

“…4 PVP is a standard treatment for fractures of the vertebral column, resulting in pain relief and improved stability. 5 Transpedicular puncture can be performed unilaterally or bilaterally during PVP. Although the former has the disadvantage of uneven distribution of bone cement, 6 it is clearly superior to the latter in terms of operation time, trauma, and radiation exposure to the doctors and patients.…”

“…The treatments are generally indicated if the actual vertebral height loss is estimated above 40% and kyphosis as above 30 degrees. A deformity of vertebral bodies analysed on lateral spine imaging possess to be common difficulties of Osteoporosis that frequently leads to spinal deformity, back pain, functional inability and every tends to death [8][9]. Hence, they are considered as one of the most threatening diseases which maximizes the economic society burden [10].…”
