Effects of pesticide-adjuvant combinations used in almond orchards on olfactory responses to social signals in honey bees (Apis mellifera)

Wen-Yen Wu,
Ling-Hsiu Liao,
Chia-Hua Lin
et al.

Abstract: Exposure to agrochemical sprays containing pesticides and tank-mix adjuvants has been implicated in post-bloom mortality, particularly of brood, in honey bee colonies brought into California almond orchards for pollination. Although adjuvants are generally considered to be biologically inert, some adjuvants have exhibited toxicity and sublethal effects, including decreasing survival rates of next-generation queens. Honey bees have a highly developed olfactory system to detect and discriminate among social sign… Show more

“…2,[4][5][6] Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO 3 ) was demonstrated as one of the most promising agents [7][8][9][10][11][12] by removing the active ingredient (AI) in the cuticular wax layer of fresh produce through alkaline hydrolysis. 13 Adjuvants are commonly added to pesticide formulations to enhance their effectiveness, 14 with non-ionic surfactants being one of the most popular types. 15,16 The most abundant used non-ionic surfactants are alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) and alcohol ethoxylates (AEOs).…”
