Effects of Pineal Peptides on Circadian Dynamics of Spermatogonia Proliferation in Albino Rats

Abstract: Mitotic index of type B spermatogonia in intact animals is characterized by a circadian rhythm. Mitotic index increased and its circadian rhythm disappeared after pinealectomy. Treatment with Epithalamin for 14 days restored the circadian rhythm. The circadian biorhythm of spermatogonia proliferation suggests the presence of circadian rhythm of spermatogenesis in general and its regulation by the pineal gland.

“…The procedure of animal fixation and removal of the gland takes 10 min and is performed by one worker, while the other sutures the skin wound. We operated about 1500 animals by this method for evaluating the role of the pineal gland in regulation of circadian rhythm of proliferation and spermatogenesis [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Rhythmic activity of the proliferative system is regulated at different levels [1,2]. It seems that the effects of whole-body regulators of proliferation should be realized through the tissue regulator system [9], which can be seen from organ and tissue specificity of cell multiplication rhythms.…”
