“…This increase in the concentration of sugars in the fruit may have been due to the role that K plays in the apoplastic co-transport during the sucrose charge from the mesophile to the phloem, mediated by ATPase enzymes (Le Bot et al, 1994). Other results would confirm the positive effect of a K increase upon the TSS of this species, as has been documented by several authors (Lin, Huang and Wang, 2004;Demiral and Köseoglu, 2005).…”

“…Hartz et al (2001Hartz et al ( , 2005 attributed the absence of any response of fruit SSC to other overriding factors, such as cultivar and irrigation management, which potentially masked any K effects. Lin et al (2004) found that supplemental K fertilization of melon in soilless culture increased fruit sucrose content but had no effect on fruit fructose and glucose concentrations. However, in the Lester et al, (2006) study, netted muskmelon fruit sucrose, glucose and fructose levels were increased by supplemental foliar K fertilization.…”

“…(Ache et al 2001) provided evidence for faba bean (Vicia faba L.) indicating that K + channels are involved in sugar unloading. Potassium-induced increases in fruit sugar levels have also been reported in hydroponically grown muskmelon plants (Lin et al 2004) however, the mechanism for this effect was also unclear. Although a threshold tissue K concentration for attaining optimum fruit sugar levels has not been established, our melon data (Lester et al 2005 and2006;Jifon and Lester 2009) provide additional evidence that fruit sugar concentrations can be increased through supplemental foliar K sprays.…”

“…A não aceitação do fruto sob deficiência de K, provavelmente, tenha sido devida ao menor valor de sólidos solúveis totais encontrados nos frutos. Segundo Lin et al (2004) e Shalit et al (2000), há uma correlação positiva entre a concentração total de açúcar e o aroma dos frutos.…”
