Effects of prebiotics on immune system and cytokine expression

Abstract: Nowadays, use of prebiotics as feed and food additives has received increasing interest because of the beneficial effects of prebiotics on the health of animals and humans. One of the beneficial effects of prebiotics is stimulation of immune system, which can be direct or indirect through increasing population of beneficial microbes or probiotics, especially lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, in the gut. An important mechanism of action of probiotics and prebiotics, by which they can affect the immune sy… Show more

“…Preservation, including fermentation, will not only support nutrition programming, but could be applied at times of increased team stress when athletes’ immune function is more susceptible to illness. Locally, seasonally, and organically grown produce is more nutritious [175,179,180,188,228] and fermentation (e.g., pre- and probiotics) may add immune [229,230] support in times when athletes need it. Check with local University Extension offices for safe guidelines on canning and fermentation.…”

“…Prebiotics are nondigestible dietary ingredients that can be fermented by specific intestinal microflora to stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria colonized in the gut. Probiotics are live and natural microbiota that can be administrated safely (). Both prebiotics and probiotics are good candidates for the modulating the gut microbiota and conferring favorable effects to the host.…”

“…Stress conditions, including HS, induce alterations in the microbiota balance, which may result in the colonization of enteric pathogens [63], and intestinal inflammatory responses [64]. Stabilization of the gut microbiota composition by pro-, pre-, syn-, and postbiotics is considered as an effective strategy to improve gut health and to protect the intestines against stress conditions [65][66][67][68].…”
