Effects of preweaning environmental enrichment on later problem-solving behavior in rats

Abstract: Two experiments investigated the importance of visual sensory modality in mediating enriched environmental effects during the preweaning period, and the importance of onset and duration of the enriched experience during the same period. Rat mothers and pups were exposed together in an enriched environment for either 7 or 11 days at different periods from Day 1 to Day 21. Also included was a group of rats which received only handling from Day 11 to Day 21 postpartum and another group in which the mothers were e… Show more

“…Other manipulations such as handling (Villescas, Bell, Wright, & Kufner, 1977;Smotherman, 1983) and environmental "enrichment" (Ivinskis & Homewood, 1980;Muir, Pfister, & Ivinskis, 1985) have been shown to affect maternal behavior and pup development. What distinguishes our temperature manipulation from other manipulations is that lactating dams show a clear preference for the surface temperatures used here (Jans & Leon, 1983).…”

“…Combining of these procedures has previously been shown to induce the strongest stimulatory effect on development of rats (Krech et al, 1960;Ivinskis and Homewood, 1980). Thus, rats were subjected to intensive multisensory stimulation from PND 7 to 21.…”

“…Several different techniques have been used to provide enhanced stimulation during the preweaning period. Some researchers have utilized an enriched environment, like that described above, by either placing each litter into separate enriched environments (Denenberg, Woodcock, & Rosenberg, 1968;Ivinskis & Homewood, 1980) or by placing pups from different litters into a single enriched environment with one foster mother (Forgays & Read, 1962). In each case, this form of preweaning experience led to enhanced problemsolving ability on the Hebb-Williams maze during adulthood.…”
