Effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques in treating chronic nonspecific low back pain patients

Abstract: Introduction. As one of the highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorders, low back pain incurs high medical care costs. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation has been used in treating chronic low back pain. This study aimed to investigate the effects of multiple proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques on endurance of the trunk musculature, spinal mobility, and impairment of function in cases of chronic low back pain. Methods. Patients in this study were randomly assigned into 3 groups. Group A r… Show more

“…Moreover, PNF incorporates spiral and diagonal directions, which have been shown to enhance human performance and alleviate the physical symptoms of long-term LBP more effectively than traditional single-direction exercise regimens [ 10 ]. The components of exercise programs for managing chronic LBP can vary, including factors such as the duration and intensity of exercises, as well as the type and frequency of exercise [ 8 ]. Hwangbo et al discovered that PNF techniques target the enhancement of trunk stability and overall body movement by employing diagonal segmental actions in multiple directions.…”

“…The primary goals of physical exercise in CLBP treatment include enhancing muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance, promoting tissue healing, and improving the ability to perform daily activities, including work [ 7 ]. The components of exercise programs for managing chronic LBP can vary significantly, depending on factors such as exercise duration, intensity, type, and frequency [ 8 ]. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) emerges as a potential approach for addressing CLBP, involving a variety of manual maneuvers [ 4 ].…”

“…According to a study by Fouda et al neuromuscular control through stimulation of muscle and joint proprioceptors as well as sensory inputs from peripheral organs, affects the CNS motor outputs and encourages functional activity of daily living. The authors recommended that patients with CLBP be treated with a combination of isotonic exercises and the rhythmic stabilisation training technique of PNF [ 24 ]. Sipko et al evaluated how PNF affected people with persistent LBP on the tandem, one-leg standing and centre of pressure tests.…”

“…Physical therapy plays a pivotal role in addressing neuromuscular issues, with this study utilizing a combination of isotonic and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) to enhance functionality [ 11 ]. Muscle groups are contracted concentrically, eccentrically, and statically without relaxing [ 12 ], and PNF-based exercise regimens prove beneficial in improving patients' functionality [ 13 ].…”
