Effects of Prostaglandin E1 on Hepatic Blood Flow in Conscious Dogs with Chronic Biliary Obstruction

Abstract: To evaluate the effects of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) on the hepatic circulation in cholestasis, hepatic arterial blood flow (HAF), portal venous blood flow (PVF), cardiac output, and heart rate during PGE1 infusions were investigated before and 2 weeks after biliary obstruction in conscious dogs by a transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter. In the control period, HAF and PVF increased dose dependently with the infusion of PGE1 from 0.05 to 0.5 µg/kg/min. During the biliary o… Show more

“…Clinical and experimental studies on portal vein embolization offer revolutionary progress in liver surgery and have actually increased resectability and the safety of major liver resection for advanced hilar cholangiocarcinoma ,. Hemodynamic studies on the perioperative condition of the cholestatic liver have also contributed to safer management of surgical patients . Major liver resection with extended autonomic nerve and lymph node dissection has been performed in Nagoya University Hospital to overcome bile duct carcinoma with perineural invasion, which is an inherent characteristic and major prognostic factor of biliopancreatic cancers,76,77 and we have emphasized here some benefits of this type of surgery.…”

“…[32][33][34][35][36][37][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67] Hemodynamic studies on the perioperative condition of the cholestatic liver have also contributed to safer management of surgical patients. [68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75] Major liver resection with extended autonomic nerve and lymph node dissection has been performed in Nagoya University Hospital to overcome bile duct carcinoma with perineural invasion, which is an inherent characteristic and major prognostic factor of biliopancreatic cancers, 76,77 and we have emphasized here some benefits of this type of surgery. However, not only the advantages but also the hazards of the extended surgery should be carefully evaluated by both Eastern and Western surgeons because autonomic nerve dissection may confer some unknown effects on the surgical patients.…”

“…We also further confirmed that these enzymes were correlated with the degree of liver cell necrosis. Furthermore, the intraportal infusion of PGE1 could improve hepatic arterial and portal venous blood flow [ 13 ]. PGE1 also could inhibit platelet aggregation to improve microcirculatory failure and hypoxia [ 20 ].…”

“…Furthermore, short oxygenated warm perfusion combined with PGE1 could reduce hepatocyte necrosis and apoptosis and ameliorate mitochondrial permeability transition in liver grafts [ 12 ]. Although the previous study had reported that a low dose of PGE1 infusion could improve hepatic arterial and portal venous blood flow in the extrahepatic cholestatic model [ 13 ], its mechanism against IR injury in extrahepatic cholestatic liver has not been elucidated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of intraportal PGE1 on liver IR injury in a common bile duct ligated rat model.…”
