“…Lucas and Lodge (1961) (Zimmerman and Khajarern 1973). The consensus is that complex starter diets promote greater feed intakes and weight gains than do simple diets (Meade et al 1969;Bayley and Carlson 1970;Zimmerman 1972 (Zimmerman and Khajarern 1913). It is possible, however, that the use of complex starter diets could significantly reduce the check in growth associated with weaning (Smith and Lucas 1956;Meade et al 1965;Bayley and Carlson 1970 …”

“…In a series of triah (10,11) it was found that the inclusion of dried skimmilk or fishmeal in corn-soybean meal diets did not consistently improve liveweight $owth. Also, corn-soybean meal diets which contained between 18 and 2IVo protein appeared adequate as measured by rate of gain (9, (Table 2) and fed until a mean pen liveweight of 50 kg was attained.…”

“…They did observe increased gains, nitrogen digestibility, and nitrogen retention with added methionine. Meade et al (1965) were unable to show any effect due to methionine alone.…”

“…Most of the work in this area has been done on growing pigs and with all vegetable diets. Bowland and Asplund (1960) reported that lysine additions to a basal wheat ration containing 10% protein, when the ration was fed to baby pigs, increased gains, but that methionine and tryptophan additions to the Long et al (1962) and Meade et al (1965) were both unable to show a growth response when lysine was added to a 167,-corn-soybean meal starting diet. Long et al (1962) found added lysine depressed growth of pigs from 3 to 5 weeks of age, but they added lysine at what would be considered excessive levels.…”
