Effects of psychosocial factors on posttraumatic growth among lung cancer patients: A structural equation model analysis

Abstract: Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate how locus of control, coping strategies, emotion regulation strategies and social support affect posttraumatic growth. Methods A cross‐sectional study design was adopted. A convenience sample of 540 patients with lung cancer was recruited from November 2016 to July 2017 at two tertiary grade A hospitals in China. “…PTG has been extensively reported in diverse populations, such as cancer patients (Zhang et al 2021), natural disaster survivors (Zhang et al 2020), and family members of patients (Aftyka et al 2017). Previous studies have shown that higher PTG may not only significantly reduce subjects' emotional stress and improve subjective well-being, but also reduce loneliness and depressive symptoms (Lee et al 2019;Veronese et al 2017).…”

“…Psychosocial factor analysis of PTG points out that the level of PTG may vary according to individual characteristics (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004;Zhang et al 2021). A meta-analysis indicated that there was a small to moderate gender difference in PTG, with females reporting higher levels of PTG than males (Vishnevsky et al 2010).…”

“…In the cancer group of survivors, a significantly stronger positive relationship was found between PTG and the regular attendance of cancer support groups, compared to patients in treatment. Psychosocial support is another important factor in facilitating PTG (Zhang et al, 2021;Cormio et al, 2017;Prati & Pietrantoni, 2009). Based on the present findings, it seems that for PTG it is useful to be in touch with other cancer survivors, even a long survivors were fighting spirit and fatalism.…”
