Effects of rare earth La on the microstructure and melting property of (Ag-Cu28)-30Sn alloys prepared by mechanical alloying

Abstract: To obtain novel intermediate temperature alloy solders with a melting temperature of 400-600°C, nominal (Ag-Cu 28 )-30Sn alloys without or with a trace addition (0.5 or 1.0 wt.%) of rare earth (RE) element La were prepared by mechanical alloying. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of the addition of La on the microstructures, alloying process and melting properties of (Ag-Cu 28 )-30Sn alloys. The results show that the addition of La produces no new phase. A trace amount of La addition can e… Show more

“…Among Ag-based alloys, Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd systems are widely used, due to its extremely low solidus temperature and excellent fluidity [15,16]. Pb, Bi, Al, Fe [17] are studied and they were reported harmful to the properties of Ag-based filler alloys, while Ga, In [13,18], Ce [19], La [20], Sn, Ni [21], etc., were reported as effective additives to the Ag-based filler alloys. Ni has many special properties that can improve joint quality.…”

“…However, the applications of Ag-Cu-Sn alloys should not be limited to the substitution for conventional low temperature Sn-37Pb solder. It will also be a promising intermediate temperature alloy solder with melting temperature of 400-600°C [6,7].…”

“…8 Moreover, rare earth (RE) elements have been called the ''vitamin'' of metals, which means that a small amount of RE elements can greatly enhance the properties of metals. 9 Some researchers have tried to improve the wettability and oxidation resistance of SnZn based solders with the addition of RE Ce, Pr and Nd. [10][11][12] In this paper, RE Y was selected as the additive for SnZn solder.…”

“…Accordingly, many SnZn alloy systems with different alloying elements, such as Cu, In, Bi, Al and Ag, have been developed, and their soldering characteristics have been reported to improve the wettability and oxidation resistance 8.
